Q:
Will I be able to dial 411 or 911 from my Packet8 number? (Answer)
Yes! You can dial 411 to connect to the National Directory Assistance and Reverse Directory Assistance public operators to check telephone numbers, addresses and reverse look up services across the nation. There is a service charge of $.75 per call.

Q:
What equipment do I need to run the Packet8 service? (Answer)
To enjoy the Packet8 IP telephone service, you need a high-speed broadband Internet connection (such as DSL or cable) and a normal telephone. 8x8 will supply you with a small adapter that connects your telephone to your Internet connection. The adaptor can connect to any available ethernet jack (RJ-45) on your home or business network. This device will support 2 Packet8 phone lines or the second Ethernet port can be used for connecting your PC or other networked device without adding an extra Ethernet switch hub. (hide this answer)

Q: How long after ordering on-line will I be able to use the Packet8 service? (Answer)

Q: How do I order the Packet8 Broadband Phone service? (Answer)
Simply click on the "Order Now" button on this page and click through to the order form. You will be asked to select a rate center (State and city) and whether you wish to port your existing number to your Packet8 service. (hide this answer) |
Q: Is there a way to connect all of the phones in my house to Packet8? (Answer)
Yes.
Each phone jack on a Packet8 adapter
can support up to three phones. You
could buy a multiple analog jack extension
connector and plug it into the adapter'sphone
jack(s). This connector would allow
you to use up to three phones on a
single Packet8 line.
Another alternative is to use a cordless phone system. These phone systems come with a base unit and extra handsets. The Packet8 Uniden Whole House VoIP Phone System is ideal for this purpose. The base station of the cordless phone system plugs into the adapter. The extra handsets can then be placed anywhere in the house.
You could also purchase wireless phone jacks. The base unit of the wireless phone jack system connects to the adapter and the wireless jacks plug into your household electrical outlets. You can then connect the phone to the wireless jack.
NOT RECOMMENDED: Some people disconnect the phone company from their house and then connect our box into one of the outlets in their house, thus powering all of the other outlets. If you try to do this, please make sure that the phone company is COMPLETELY disconnected (and stays disconnected) before connecting us, otherwise you will damage your DTA-310 box. If you are unsure of what you are doing, please contract with a licensed wiring technician. (hide this answer) |
Q: When will

Q: How do I make local, long distance or international calls? (Answer)
For domestic Packet8 calls, you need to dial 1+area code+number, even for local calls (for example, 14087271885, instead of just 7271885 if you have a 408 Packet8 rate center). For international calls, Packet8 does not require the ''011'' before the international number. You just dial country code, area code, then phone number (for example, dialing France would be 33497231260 instead of 01133497231260). (hide this answer) |
Q: Can I transfer my existing telephone number to Packet8? Do you support local number portability? (Answer)
Packet8 offers free of charge the ability to bring your current phone number to Packet8. Our web site will provide online tools in the future to check if your phone number can be brought over to Packet8 and what forms are needed by local exchange carriers to authorize Packet8 to act on your behalf to complete the move of your phone number. Although Packet8 makes every attempt to work with all local exchange carriers and other telephone service providers across the United States, certain local or regional guidelines may preclude your current provider from releasing your number to Packet8. In such cases a new number from Packet8 would be required to subscribe to our service. The process can take up to six weeks to complete and Packet8 will provide a temporary phone number during the process as well as turn off old service. (hide this answer) |
Q: Does Packet8 support FAX machines, modems, TIVO boxes, or DirectTV boxes? (Answer)
At this time, we only offer audio and video communications on our network. FAX machines and modems may not work reliably over the Packet network. We hope to be the first VOIP provider to offer reliable FAX and modem service in the near future.

Q: If I change the location of my Packet8 device will my IP Address change? (Answer)
Yes, the Packet8 device IP address will most likely change if it is moved to a different network connection. However, the adapter will synchronize itself with the Packet8 service once connected and powered on so a change in the IP address will not impact your Packet8 service. (hide

Q: What if I move to another town? Is it possible to change phone numbers after service has been ordered? (Answer)
Yes, we allow our subscribers to change their rate centers just by notifying us of the request (either by e-mail or through our support line). We will move your Packet8 phone number to any other available rate center upon your request at no additional charge to you.
Another option is to select a Virtual Number which will have the new location area code while retaining your old number for contacts in your old locale. This can be done in the Accounts Details web page of your Packet8 account. (hide

Q: Do I need to use special dialing codes in order to use the Packet8 phone? (Answer)

do not send you a paper bill. Your online

Q: Will Packet8 work with my alarm system? (Answer)

Q: Will Packet8 contact my current telephone company so that my old, legacy telephone service will be cancelled? (Answer)
No, we do not contact your existing telephone company. Packet8 will assign you a new Packet8 telephone number that works over your existing internet connection, but you are responsible for making any changes to your existing telephone service, if you so desire. You can use Packet8 and your legacy telephone service at the same time, if you wish. (hide

Q: I have a high speed DSL or cable modem that connects to my computer via USB. How can I add Packet8 to this setup? (Answer)
Packet8 requires an RJ-45 ethernet connection to work. If your computer has an ethernet card in it, you can configure Windows to function as a "soft-router" using internet connection sharing. Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found at:
http://www.packet8.net/support/faqs/20030128.asp
Otherwise, you need to switch to a modem that includes
RJ-45 connectors which would allow Packet8 to be connected
directly to the modem, or to be connected to a home
router that is connected directly to the modem.(hide
